Red Jacket - BlueSky Health Winnin' De Hardware Mon
John Gershenson, May 26, 2008
Nine Red Jacket - BlueSky Health racers were among a crew of about a dozen that headed down to Rhinelander, Wisconsin for the RASTA Rally. Leaving from The Bike Shop in a cold drizzle, we got to Rhinelander (early) in time to see the mercury begin its climb to about 75. The course there is nearly entirely singletrack after the first 1.5 miles - a mix of roots, dips, and small rocks we refer to as Kleinville. The team was impressive. No one had more than 3 days of single track under their belt with over half having zero days on anything remotely technical. Despite that, the team walked away with four podium finishes and four of the top 15 overall spots.

Mark Klein finished fifth overall and second in 20-29 and Heather Wright finished second overall for women. Other place winners were Pat Szubielak (second in 50-59) and John Gershenson (first in 40-49). Ryan Labar finished seventh overall and Caleb Wendel finished 12th overall. Of special note, was a real break out performance by Brett Hamlin who, after shedding over a pound with some new wheels, cruised to a sixth place in the 30-39 class. For future reference, when your bike shop tells you to ride your full suspension bike in this race, listen and there's no place to drink so don't bother with the water bottles. Other news from the race: Annie Klein also came in fifth overall in the sport women (isn't that cute, Mark and Annie both came in fifth) and first in her age group and Lisa Spreitzer (Ryan's better half and sixth overall in expert women) made the cover shot on the web page. Next week will see the team in some varied action at WORS and MCPS, as the team "prepares" for the Chaindrive.
