First "team roadtrip" race of the year:
WORS #1 Iola Bump and Jump

John Gershenson, May 7, 2008
Ten members of the Red Jacket-BlueSky Health Cycling Team were among a 17 person/1 dog contingent that road tripped to the first WORS race in Iola, Wisconsin. The Iola Bump and Jump (at the ski jumping hill and winter sports complex in Iola) proved a great beginning of the season warmup for the team. The course was fast with some good power climbing, but lots of big chainring riding.
Leaving from The Bike Shop after a day of snow (on May 3!), we were all happy to see the sun come out as we hit the Wisconsin line. Many of us spent the night in Wausau at Mrs. Klein's beautiful house on the lake (thanks Jan). After a nice breakfast, and inspired by videos in Brett's family van, the team headed to the course. The place was packed with about 700 participants in warm, windy weather for the first of the largest mtb race series in the US. We all made a home under the new "The Bike Shop" tent, inviting all Keweenaw riders to join us.

The team, thanks to pre-race tune ups by Steve and Caleb, was completely mechanical-free for the race. Our only excuse was wet trails and cold and snow back in Houghton - we are pretty pastey white. For a first race, we were just starting to get the bottle handoff system going. Once the new bottles come in (and especially the kits), this will be much smoother.
On to the results:
Terry "bugs in his teeth from smiling too much" Kinzel - 8th in Citizen 50-59 men
"Downhill" Diane Ursu - 2nd in Sport 30-39 women
Tammi "better half" Lehto - 4th in Sport 30-39 women
Brett "pimped out minivan drivin'" Hamlin - 21st in Sport 35-39 men

Mark "my mom rocks, and Sophie's cute too" Klein - 9th in Comp 25-29 men
Chris "43rd among all elite racers!" Schmidt - 7th in Expert 40+ men

It sounds like the next races for the team will be (in various pieces of the team) - Tour da Keweenaw, Cable Area Off-road Classic, Treadfest (WORS), 12 Hours of Addison Oaks, or 12 Hours of Gears. Check out the event calendar for details.
