Red Jacket - BlueSky
Health rider Chris Schmidt held on for a 5th place finish
in this weekend's second running of the Ronde van Skandia,
a brustish race designed to simulate every aspect of
a European classic, right down to the weather. Won by
Chocolay Ace Hardware cycling team member Andy Langlois,
who took a two-up sprint over teammate Wes Pernsteiner,
the race took the 11-man peleton through the backroads
of Marquette county. Numerous secteurs of pave, dirt
roads, potholes and lingering, yet jumpable, piles of
snow combined with rain, sleet and temperatures hovering
around the 40 degree mark demanded mental and physical
stamina from the riders and mechanical durability from
their bikes.

The few attacks waged against the
peloton over the 135km course were quickly neutralized by
the field, which was unwilling to let a chance at victory
slip out of their sights. With 10k to go, however, fatigue
had taken its toll on the racers and failure to respond
to attacks at this stage of the game was certain erase any
chance of seeing glory in one of the U.P's most prestigious
one-day events. Cresting the final climb, eventual winner
Andy Langlois, Derek Anderson and Pernsteiner, all riding
for the well-trained Chocolay Ace Hardware cycling team,
opened a small gap. Red Jacket - Blue Sky Health rider Chris
Schmidt went in pursuit with independent rider Mike Dagget,
descending the treacherous dirt road and it's water-filled
craters at breakneck speed. Rounding a muddy 90-degree corner,
the pair latched back on with nobody but Chocolay Ace Hardware
Director Sportif Tom Mahaney in sight behind them.
The quintet worked well together in the final miles to ensure
that one of the five would see victory. In spite of orders
from DS Maheney to drop back and regroup, Langlois and Pernsteiner,
citing loss of radio contact, launched an unstoppable attack
at the base of the small rise leading up to the finish,
with Langlois taking the win by a couple of bike lengths.
Anderson left Dagget and Schmidt to fight out 5th place.
In the end, Dagget captured fourth and Schmidt rounded out
the top five.
Afterwards, racers and family alike celebrated the race,
the weather and camaraderie with burgers, brats and fine
Beglian ales. Thanks to Racer organizer Tom Mahaney and
his wife Mary for hosing the event!
