Oct. 20, 2009
The second annual Keweenaw Cup Cyclocross Race, hosted by the Red Jacket - BlueSky Health Cycling Team kicks off this weekend with the Top of the World Smackdown at the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge Saturday afternoon. Racing action concludes on Sunday in Copper Harbor with the Downtown Smackdown. The pair of races, which mark stops four and five in the seven-race UPCROSS series, is expected to draw upwards of 50 racers from across the U.P., Northern Wisconsin and perhaps beyond.
The opening salvo of the B race in the 2008 Keweenaw Cup
Looking to defend their Keweenaw Cup titles are Blu Tenbrink and Amy Michaels. Will the pair be brandishing the Keweenaw Cup tattoos they won in the '08 edition of the race?

With two races on the line this weekend, series point leaders will need to make at least one of the days of racing in order to stay in contention for the UPCROSS title. Leading the way in the men's A division is Tyler Jenema, who holds a slim margin over perennial powerhouse Jeff Juntti and Jesse Bell, who has notched a series a consistent high finishes. Should either Juntti or Jemema falter, Bell could assume the lead. On the women's side, just two points separate Andrea Pernsteiner and Nicole Alexander. The battle is sure to be intense between the pair all weekend long. In the men's B class, Red Jacket Steve Webber is looking for a win for the weekend and to move up from third in the overall standings. Currently, Colby Lash leads the standings in the B class, with Kenny Paterson hot on his tail. Chase Juntti hopes to solidify his lead in the junior class, where he leads a strong Finn Whalen by 6 points.

In addition to plenty of intense cyclocross racing action, there's no shortage of things to do in Copper Harbor this weekend. Following Saturday's races, there will be a pasta dinner at the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge to benefit the Copper Harbor Trails Club followed by music by Andy Laglois and, later in the evening, by the Black Flies. A Sunday morning breakfast buffet at the Lodge will give racers an opportunity to refuel in advance of the Downtown Hoedown.
